The castle was originally constructed by the Neville family in the late 14th century. The Nevilles were one of the most powerful families in the north of England during the medieval period. Raby Castle’s construction began around 1367 under John, 3rd Baron Neville de Raby, and continued under his son Ralph, 1st Earl of Westmorland.
